What’s in a name?

A lot of fun for local schoolchildren it would seem, who happily engaged with us over the suggestions and selection of names for our resident osprey pair.

We are pleased to announce that our male osprey is to be called Syfaddan* named after Llangors Lake, which is one of the favoured fishing grounds. The female will be known as Clogwyn** after the imposing rocky outcrop on the Allt overlooking their nest. This feature has also assumed the more romantic mantle of “the Pride Rock from The Lion King” - for fairly obvious reasons - by other children in the area.

Our thanks go to the four local schools who showed so much interest in the ospreys and took part so readily in the competition. There were 16 names chosen by the children and the two winning entries were picked out of a hat by UVO Chair, Andy King.

It is of note that names are usually only chosen for adult osprey which do not carry an identification leg ring. Our pair, thought to be at least 3 years old, are of unknown origin. It is hoped that any chicks will be leg-ringed and therefore will be unnamed.
